Packaging

Part of me wanted to keep the box. I don’t know why, but I’m just a sucker for a magnetic closing lid.

After you open up the box (and have stopped playing with the magnetic lid), you’re greeted with a vac-u-pack packaged log and bits of paperwork. One-piece repeats what’s on the box, another two are adverts, and the last has yet another set of instructions in various languages. I will say, one thing I really like about the box is that the pull tab isn’t this tiny little thing, it’s sturdy, just like the rest of the box.

If you thought the packaging of the Rockabilly Doggy Riser was big, just wait until you see it inflated. Before I got a bigger bed this thing took up half a double bed. I can’t even hug it.

To assemble, all you have to do is slide the bag out of the box, remove the outer cover, remove the clear plastic – but not the protective cover, and let it rise! Once it’s puffed up you can slip the waterproof cover over it, and zip it up.

My Opinions in Use

I had sex on all fours, and my legs didn’t collapse under me when attempting to walk. I also didn’t need my walking stick! I’d class that as a success in my book.

… for that one position.

Now, this is where things start to get a little frustrating, and for once I don’t mean sexually frustrating. I attempted to use the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser in other positions – underneath during PIV sex, as a prop for oral, and one of the more adventurous suggested positions that I call ‘leg in the air like you definitely care’, and it wasn’t working.

I even tried it out during pegging. When used to peg your partner, and depending on your height difference, you might find that the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser is just a little too big, or small. In doggy, it’s too big, in missionary, too small.

Lying on the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser would be nice if it was just a tad softer. When you start to get yourself situated you realise that the curve hits the ribs at a really uncomfortable spot. The great thing about the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser is that you can plonk yourself on it wherever, but it doesn’t soften the impact.

My last point is that it’s quite the angle to lean on. It would be perfect if it had a little more tapering at the end to soften the drop. Whilst I know it might make it pricer, if they just took a little off the top, and added it to the end it would be perfect.

And here we have the running theme with the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser, it’s ‘just’ something or another. A few features could be improved with just a few tweaks or additions (read on), a softer material would mean I could use it for other positions, and a little bit more length would support the body more.

As an aside, I have found that I can use the Doggy Riser as a leg pillow, albeit a very fancy, difficult-to-move, expensive leg pillow.

Positives of the Rockabilly Doggy Riser

  • Accessible Bedroom Furniture: Before I rip it apart, I want to state that the Doggy Riser is one of the most accessible pieces of sex furniture I’ve come across. It’s made to support the body during sex, and it’s pretty easy to assemble.
  • It works as intended: Oh gosh. I could sing the praises of the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser in doggy. I know it’s made for it, but I generally don’t believe the hype as I’ve been let down too many times before. I can rest my weight on Doggy Riser, and feel comfortable doing so. That’s no easy feat. To trust a piece of sex furniture with my body is a huge seal of approval.
  • Comfy: The end curves of the Doggy Rise mean that you’re not whacking into a corner during fucking, and the microfibre material is soft underhand, and skin. There’s nothing abrasive as the zip is well-positioned to not get in the way.
  • Quality & Appearance: I’ll get on to the price shortly, but I can’t deny that the Doggy Rise is well made. If a product has a zip, I will judge them by it, and Liberator has done well. It’s not a flimsy thing that will get caught easy, it’s made to last, just like the stitching on the microfibre cover. All this comes together to make the Doggy Riser a sleek product that is nice to look at.

Negatives of the Rockabilly Doggy Riser

  • It’s expensive for what it is: At the end of the day, it’s a piece of foam with a washable cover on it. If you look at the mobility section of Amazon you can find chunks of foam used as bed raises for a fraction of the cost. If you can find a big enough pillowcase – with maybe a vinyl slip underneath it, and voila. The same sort of thing! Granted, not everyone wants to go through the hassle, but you will save yourself some money. I know memory foam is expensive, and this is a big chunk of it, but £190 is not pocket change for an item that does one job. Liberator has cheaper models that do multiple jobs, so why could they do the same with the Rockabilly Doggy Riser?
  • It’s cumbersome to store: Once you’ve opened it, that’s it. You have a Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser for life. You will argue over where to store it, despair that it can’t live under the bed, and know what your partner’s intentions are if you see it balancing awkwardly on the side.  There’s no heat of the moment ‘just let me assemble the sex gear, dear’.  I’m a sex-positive disability advocate, but even I still wouldn’t want to have an awkward conversation with the ambulance crew as to what it is, and what I do. That’s generally how I judge the toys that stay in our room or ones that are ‘insight’. Leaving the Liberator out in the middle of the room is a conversation starter, but not a good one.
  • A bigger zip tag: This is a small gripe, but the tag for the zip could be bigger, it also could be made of a sturdier material. When trying to find purchase on the Doggy Riser to move it, I always end up grabbing the tag, and it’s flimsy.
  • Difficult to move: The Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser is a bit of a bitch to move around, I’m not going to sugar coat it. So if you have mobility issues, weak grip, or lack of upper body strength, please keep this in mind. It’s not necessarily too heavy, but it’s cumbersome. Considering the size, a handle or two would be a vast improvement.
  • Slippery when dry: Speaking of grip, if you try to pick it up on the thin end of the edge of the thick end, it WILL slip through your fingers. It’s a peculiar sort of slippery, but I attribute that to the microfibre cover.
  • Too firm: There’s little to no give to it. In doggy, it works well to keep you up, but it’s too firm for any other position, in my opinion.  With continued use, the foam might soften, and I look forward to that, but if it doesn’t then it’s a lot for a one-trick wonder.

To Sum Up

Positives

  • Quality product.
  • Supportive during sex.
  • Does the job in doggy.
  • Soft, material.
  • Comfortable to lean against.
  • Washable, and removable cover.
  • Easy to put together.
  • Recyclable box.

Negatives

  • Too big to be discrete.
  • Expensive
  • Hard to move.
  • A pain to store.
  • Difficult to grip.
  • It doesn’t form to the body.

Conclusion

Let’s face it, the Liberator line is a luxury brand. Whilst the Rockabilly Doggy Rise does feel rather fancy, I find it would be better put to use to prop my legs up, than a sex pillow. That’s not to say I don’t like it – I will (and by I, I mean my partner) pull it out for sex on occasion if we’re going to end up in doggy.

Would I buy this myself? No. Not this exact one. I might see if Liberator has a smaller, more multi-use one though. Am I being too harsh considering it technically does what it says on the tin? Maybe, but considering the size and cost, there needs to be more to it. It’s not accessible financially, or physically, though if they wanted to improve on the latter they could easily with some tweaks.

Bottom line the Liberator Rockabilly Doggy Riser is a full-on event. You have to do preparation for it, maybe travel to a new place (in our case the office), puzzle over where to put it after (as the space you carved out has inevitably filled with other toys), and then take a vacation, because you deserve it.

I was given this toy to review by the lovely people over at Bedroom Adventures. If you’d like to get your own, head on over.

If you’re in the US, you can also purchase Liberator products via the Liberator website. If you’re looking for a more sensibly sized (and cheaper) sex aid, try the Liberator Black Label Wedge. You can also find Liberator on SheVibe (US).
